At the Hospital The patient may have a fine, rubber tube or catheter passing into the bladder through the front passage. This is to assist the patient to pass the urine freely that can be a bit difficult after a surgical operation such as urethroscopy. There are times that the catheter needs to be flushed out to keep the urine flowing properly. The patient may be given oxygen through the facemask for a few hours if the patient has had chest problems in the past. There may be some slight discomfort or pain in the portions of the body where the instruments have been inserted or introduced. The patient will not normally need painkillers. The sensation leaves after a day or two. Nonetheless, if the patient feels that the pain cannot be tolerated, ask for help from the attending medical doctors or nurses. Painkiller tablets can usually aid but rarely that an injection will be required. A general anesthetic will cause the patient to be slow, clumsy, and scatty or forgetful for about 24 hours. The nurses will help the patient with every necessary thing that needs to be done until the patient is able to do things on his or her own. The patient is advised not make important decisions, drive a car, use machinery, or even boil a kettle during this time. (more…)

Before the operation The patient should stop smoking and try to get the body weight down if the patient is overweight. If the patient has knowledge of problems with his blood pressure, heart or lungs, he should ask their family doctor or the attending physician to check that these are under control. Ensure that the patient has a relative or friend who can come with him to the hospital, take him home, and look after him after the operation. Sort out any tablets, medicines, inhalers that the patient is using. Keep them in their original boxes and packets. Bring them to the hospital together with the patient. On the ward, the patient may be checked for past illnesses and may have special tests, ready for the operation. It is advised to inform the nurses of any allergies to tablets, medicines or dressings. The patient will have the operation explained to him and will be requested to fill in an operation consent form. The patient can visit for an hour or two, a few weeks or so to hospitals that run special pre-admission clinics prior to the operation. (more…)

Urethroscopy is an examination of the urethra through a urethroscope. The urethra is the tube that transports urine outside the body. It passes through the penis in males carrying semen as well as urine, and in females it emerges above the vaginal opening. If a patient experiences pain, discomfort, infection, or injury anywhere in the bladder area, a urethroscopy is often recommended. A urethroscopy may be called for if there is a suspected growth or blockage in the urinary bladder or if a biopsy by removing a small piece of tissue for examination, of the bladder or urethra needs to be done. (more…)
